Nationals Qualification 2019
Coalburn Silver Band will represent Scotland at this year’s National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain.
The band were runners up at the Scottish Championships in Perth following a wonderful, musical performance of the set work ‘Rise of the Phoenix’ by Darrol Barry.
Coalburn were drawn 9th from the 11 competing bands and took to the stage in the late afternoon. Under the baton of musical director Gareth Bowman the South Lanarkshire outfit ‘blew away’ the adjudicators Sheona White and Brett Baker who commented ‘Overall a performance that told a story with some excellent soloists, so well directed, prepared and thought out.’ The band was also thrilled that principal cornet, Euan Roberts was awarded the best instrumentalist prize for his fantastic contribution to the band’s performance. The band are delighted that Euan has returned to Coalburn following his move to South Lanarkshire. Euan is pictured on stage receiving his medal from adjudicator Sheona White.
The band was beaten to top spot by the Newmains & District Brass Band. The result means the band will be performing at the national finals to be held at the Centaur, Cheltenham racecourse in September of this year. Band President Alan Court is pictured on stage receiving the trophy form adjudicator Sheona White.
Band Secretary Daniel Beadle commented, ‘this is a truly fabulous result for our hard working band and musical director, even more satisfying is that 11 of our players who performed on Saturday have progressed through our band youth structure into our senior Silver Band.’
The band were very grateful to both Ron Wotherspoon and Anne Crookston who stepped into play with the band due to illness of two of our own band members. Ross Abernethy (euphonium) and Eva Potsma (cornet) made their debuts at the Scottish Championships, the rest of the 22 band members on stage performed with the band at last year’s Scottish Championships.
