Scottish Champions!
Coalburn Silver Band have become Scottish Champions at the recent finals held at the Perth Concert Hall.
The Band under the direction of their musical director Gareth Bowman triumphed over a strong field of 11 bands to win the 2nd Section at the Scottish Championships.
The result will mean promotion back to the 1st Section and an opportunity to represent Scotland at the National finals in Cheltenham in September.
Coalburn were drawn first in the competition and were on stage at 9.30am and our performance of Philip Harper’s The Mermaid of Zennor found favour with the adjudicators Ian Brownbill and John Doyle. The adjudicators commented that the performance had everything from confident soloists to a well-balanced ensemble and the band played with careful attention to tuning. (Band President Alan Court is pictured on stage with the adjudicators)
It was also wonderful for the band’s new players, Robert Butters, Cameron Raeburn and Malcolm Vannan who enjoyed the victory. A particular mention has to go to 14 year old Anna Biggart who only joined the Silver Band in January from our youth set up and is pictured alongside a number of players who have also progressed from Bronze and Intermediate Bands.
The weekend was to get even better, on Sunday afternoon the Coalburn Intermediate Band took to the stage in the 4B Section and in front of a full house played a short and very musical concert programme under their musical director, Kyle MacCorquodale. Kyle, a bass trombonist has recently been announced as one of 4 finalists in the prestigious BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Award 2016 and will perform along with the world famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band at the finals in Manchester on the 15th April.
Coalburn Silver Band has a busy diary and will be performing in Lanark on Friday 29th April in the 90 Years of the Lanark Memorial Hall Concert, followed by an afternoon of music making at Hamilton Low Parks Museum on Saturday 14th May and then at our ‘Music from the Movies’ concert at the Livingstone Memorial Parish Church, Blantyre on the 21st May. For more details please visit the Band Diary webpage.
All the bands in the Coalburn organisation encourage any new players to join them, the Silver Band are in particular looking for a Soprano Cornet player whilst vacancies exist in all sections of the Intermediate and Bronze Bands and Percussion Academy. Please don’t hesitate to Contact Us for more information.
