Coalburn pride at youngster's NYBBS experience
Last month eleven young musicians from the Coalburn Brass Band family represented the Percussion Academy, Bronze, Intermediate and Silver Bands at this year’s National Youth Brass Band of Scotland (NYBBS) summer course.
Anna Biggart, Euan Court, Jack Archibald, Robyn Anderson and Ross Abernethy performed in the Senior Band. Ben Coulter, Eilidh Court, Finlay Damer, Hannah Archibald and Tilly Trickey, performed in the Reserve Band. Whilst, Marcie Boyle, performed as part of the Children’s Band.
The Coalburn youngsters excelled throughout the week with principal positions being awarded to Marcie (Bass Trombone, Children’s Band), Eilidh (Tenor Horn, Reserve Band) and Robyn (Tenor Trombone, Senior Band). Robyn also went on to win the highly prestigious solo award seeing off competition from 20 of the country’s best young brass musicians.
Band President Alan Court commented, ’this was the largest group we’ve sent to NYBBS and is further evidence of the success through an ongoing focus on our young people. We are exceptionally proud of everyone who took part in the course; they all performed superbly and are a credit to themselves, their families and the band.’
The Coalburn musicians were part of a group of 180 young brass and percussion players from across Scotland who came together at Strathallan School in Perth for the week long course.
The week included a variety of fun activities and put the youngsters through their musical paces during full band and sectional rehearsals under the leadership of some dedicated tutors. The week concluded with end of course concerts featuring excellent performances from the Children’s, Reserve, and Senior Bands.
Young cornet player Ben Coulter left the course saying, 'this was my first time at NYBBS and I loved it, I have made so many good friends and it’s helped me so much musically.'
