Coalburn Brass Band Family in Concert
The Coalburn Brass Band Family were in concert on Friday (4 March) for the first time in over 2 years. Our night of celebration and reflection was hosted by Hamilton Baptist Church, with a capacity audience in attendance.
The evening started with the Coalburn Bronze Band on stage in full pirate attire, under the direction of David Fehilly, for a rendition of Gareth Bowman’s ‘Pirate Adventures’.
Up next were our beginners group, conducted by Matthew Howarth, with 12 of our newest members playing ‘Acapulco Bay’. Our youngest member is Charlie, who is 6 years old, with the eldest being Niamh and Benjamin, who are 11.
Coalburn Intermediate Band, under the baton of musical director David Fehilly, then gave a wonderful performance of their test piece ‘Argos’ by Stephen Hodel. The band will be performing this piece at this weekend’s 4th section Scottish Championships to be held at Perth Concert Hall.
There was then a time for reflection and solidarity as the Silver Band opened their programme with the ‘State Anthem of Ukraine’. A collection at the end of the concert raised £330 for UNICEF’s Ukrainian Appeal.
The Silver Band also performed a brass band classic, ‘Spectrum’ by Gilbert Vinter. This piece was written in the 1960s and will be the band’s test piece for Saturday’s 1st section Scottish Championships. The band gave a fully committed performance under the baton of musical director Gareth Bowman.
The audience were then treated to a brilliant rendition of Gershwin’s, ‘Someone to Watch Over Me’ by the band’s principal cornet Calum Blair, accompanied by Gareth Bowman. The evening was closed by the Silver Band, playing ‘Gonna Fly Now’ by Adrian Drover.
It really was a truly fabulous night with over 70 of the organisation’s musicians performing.
The organisation is now looking forward to their Awards Night to held on Friday 18 March.
