Brass Workshops - Sunday 5 February
Coalburn Brass Band Family had a brilliant day on Sunday 5 February with incredible musicians Sheona Wade and Helen Minshall. The band held an open day with workshops for current players and opportunities for new players to try out a brass instrument.
Helen worked with our Bronze Band members and a group of keen beginners - some who had never touched a brass instrument before. Her enthusiasm and energy was inspiring to not only the beginners, but the rest of the organisation. Amazingly, they performed a few pieces of music in front of an audience at the end of the day and were outstanding.
A new player who attended the open day said, ‘I attended the beginners workshop. It was brilliant. Helen made us all feel at ease and by the end of the day I could play a whole scale. We played two pieces in the concert which was really fun, and I have been inspired to take up an instrument and join the band. Thank you, Coalburn!’
Sheona led workshops with both of our horn sections from the Silver and Intermediate Band, as well as a masterclass about practice techniques and the mindset of being the best performer possible. Players left her workshops with a new burst of enthusiasm and inspiration to use in our home practice and in the band hall.
One of our Silver band horn players commented, ‘I thought that the horn sectional with Sheona and the workshop were truly inspirational. Absolutely loved it!’
Our Intermediate and Bronze band members also enjoyed a powerful and fun mindset workshop delivered by James Hughes, an authentic coach. He presented a transformational coaching session, helping band members motivate themselves and keep a positive mindset through everything they do. James got us up on our feet, helping us with our self-esteem by movement and breathing exercises.
An Intermediate band member remarked, ‘James made his workshop fun as well as informative. I really enjoyed it and definitely took his teachings home.’
The brass workshops were a great success and the Bronze Band has welcomed many new players to our band. We are very grateful to both Helen and Sheona for spending the day with us and to Besson, the National Lottery Community Fund and to SBBA for their support to make the event possible.
