Awards Night
Over 60 band members and their families filled the band hall in Coalburn last Saturday (29th Jan) for the bands annual
awards night. Special guest for the evening and presenting the prizes was Provost of South Lanarkshire, Russell Clearie.
Following a beautifully presented buffet, first award of the night was that of the best section. The choice of Musical Director Gareth Bowman was the Bass section; the team consisting of 4 players, Ann Black, Andy Dorricott, Michael Cowan and Alan Court were presented with framed certificates by the Provost.
The next award (the George Blackwood trophy) was to the most improved player in the Bronze Band (development Band).
The trophy was commissioned by the band to mark the outstanding contribution of the late George Blackwood and was presented by his wife Christine to recipient Liam Riley.
The award for the band’s most improved player was then presented by the Provost to Kirsty Mathieson. MD Gareth Bowman
spoke of Kristy’s drive and enthusiasm towards the band and her personal commitment in meeting the musical challenges presented to her.
The Band person of The Year is awarded to the band member who has made the most outstanding contribution to the success and working of the band. This award was voted for by the band members and the result was overwhelming, Band Secretary Daniel Beadle was presented with the glass commemorative trophy by the Provost.
An additional award had been added this year and was entitled the ‘Conductors Award’. This award reflected the outstanding musical contribution given to the band and was presented to the band’s young and talented Bass Trombone player Kyle MacCorquodale. Kyle couldn’t be there to collect his trophy so his fellow trombonist Elizabeth Meikle accepted on his behalf.
The final award of the evening was that of ‘Player of the Year’. This year’s award was presented to the bands principal
corner player Joel Harding. His outstanding contribution at both concert and contest performances coupled with his ability to encourage and assist younger members made him an obvious choice.
Provost Clearie then addressed the band members with an upbeat and motivational message speaking of his delight at the
ongoing educational work being carried out at the band through both the Silver and Bronze bands and how we must celebrate organisations such as Coalburn Silver Band, the last remaining Brass Band in South Lanarkshire. The Provost went on
to speak about the team work and warm welcome received on the night. He closed the evening by issuing a challenge to continue the good work being done and to strive to be the best that one can possibly be.
The band have a busy year ahead starting with the Scottish Championships at Perth being held in late February where the
band will compete in the 1st section for the first time in their history. The band will then be taking part in a concert to celebrate World Community Arts Day; this concert will take place on Thursday 17th February 2011 at the Hamilton Town House. A concert, ‘Brass on Broadway’ will take place at Livingston Memorial Church, Blantyre on Friday 25th March and a Memorial Concert for band stalwart Margaret Nellies taking place in Rigside in May with the bands annual concert at East Kilbride Old Parish Church taking place on Friday 3rd June with the theme being a Big Band/Swing night.
